‘Tis the Season for… Indigestion?

Indigestion often strikes during the holidays when rich, festive foods and celebratory indulgences put extra strain on our digestive systems. Whether it’s caused by feasting, toasting, or simply overindulging, the discomfort, pain, and other symptoms of indigestion can quickly dampen the joy of the moment. Fortunately, homeopathy offers gentle support to aid digestion and alleviate these symptoms, helping you fully enjoy time with family, friends, and the festivities.

There are other natural supports available to help with indigestion also. Peppermint tea and ginger tea are well known aid digestion. Gentle movement or a hot compress on the abdomen may also help. But one of the best ways to get yourself or loved ones through an episode of indigestion is to reach for your homeopathic kit and select a remedy that matches the symptoms. Here are some remedies that might be particularly useful to get you through the discomfort and back to enjoying food and drink with gusto.

Nux Vomica

Often known as the ‘hangover remedy’, Nux Vomica may come in handy whenever over-indulgence is to blame for digestive woes. Whether it’s too much candy, too much wine, too much spicy food, or simply over-stuffing oneself at a special meal, this remedy may help. Bloating and a feeling of excessive fullness may be part of the picture, which leads to the desire to loosen tight clothing.

Pulsatilla

Trouble that starts from eating rich food often responds well to Pulsatilla. Pork, pastries, and ice cream are particular culprits. Evening seems to be the worst time for indigestion in Pulsatilla, and there may be much noise coming from the stomach after the evening meal. Other features indicating a need for Pulsatilla may be relief from fresh air and slow walking, and a desire to be consoled and comforted.

Carbo Veg

Bloating and belching are the key features of Carbo Veg indigestion. Tremendous relief may be found by belching or emitting flatulence. Or the person may have a feeling that if they could only release their trapped gas in some way they would feel tremendous relief, but not be able to do so. The bloat can be quite dramatic, with the person feeling as if their abdomen was stretched tight. Along with the indigestion, the person may be chilly.

Lycopodium

The Lycopodium digestive distress is usually accompanied by bloat and a sense of fullness. They often get a feeling of being full after just a few bites of food and have to change into looser clothing to accommodate. They may also be quite flatulent during the indigestion. Belching and heartburn are also characteristic.

Zingiber

Made from ginger, this homeopathic remedy is lesser-known, but a wonderful aid to digestive woes if the symptoms fit. It’s characteristic feeling is of extreme heaviness in the stomach, almost as if there was a stone sitting in it. Often there is loud rumbling of the stomach and wind. A distinctive feature of this remedy is that the taste of what one ate may linger for a long time in the mouth.

Colocynthis

For severe cramping pains, often cutting or sharp in nature, think of Colocynthis. When this remedy is called for, you’ll often see the person doubled over forward, perhaps hugging a pillow into their stomach to apply pressure for relief. They also crave topical heat on the abdomen to bring relief.

Kali Carb

This is another remedy where bloat is prominent. If Kali Carb is needed there is often a feeling of fullness and lots of gas with relief from belching. Pain in the lower back is another key feature of this remedy and may accompany the indigestion.

Ipecacuanha

Nausea is the key feature of this remedy. There may be painful stomach ache and a persistent feeling of nausea. Having a ‘clean tongue’ (not discoloured or coated) along with nausea is an indicator for Ipecac. This person usually does not have any desire for food or drink, and eating makes the nausea worse.

Happy Eating, Drinking, and Making Merry!
